From the eSalon website: “eSalon was inspired by the idea that beautiful, quality hair color can be accessible without the uncertainties of retail products and the excessive expense of salons.”
So to understand my hair color needs, let me first tell you a little about myself. My name is Lucy and I am all gray…but seriously…It all started the latter part of high school with a few gray hairs here and there. I knew it was inevitable as both my parents went gray early on, but my mom and grandmother have always dyed their hair so that’s exactly what I did. My natural color is a honey brown, but ever since I have been colowing, I have really established myself as a redhead (in many different variations!).
I must say I was a bit apprehensive about trying eSalon..At first, I was like how can they really provide what I am looking for without seeing me or knowing what I am looking for, but the process is so much more than just a simple questionnaire! I was able to upload a few different pics really explaining where I was coming from and what I was trying to achieve with my hair color. From there, I actually received a personal email from Danielle over at eSalon letting me know about some different options in terms of my hair color choices.
These are the pictures I sent eSalon as my current hair color (left-this was a hair color gone wrong at a salon that must not be named…) and on the right is the color I really want (Photo Credit: Aveda website). I actually took this picture along with me to the salon that provided me with the color on the right…Yeah, I’m still scratching my head about that one.
My eSalon package came in the mail fairly quickly. I actually wasn’t ready to color my hair since it was the middle of the work week, so the box sat around for a few days until I was able to color my hair over the weekend. The packaging itself is so cute! The motif is all love-related, including the product names. I was completely impressed with the overall presentation ❤
The first thing I opened up was my personal envelope…It honestly looked like a wedding invitation. I really wish I had taken a picture of it before I opened it, but I was just so excited to see what was in it! My envelope contained my personalized instructions..literally…they were personalized! See my name!!! How cool is that?!?!
On the left side of my huge box was all my hair color ingredients and supplies. I would imagine this is what a typical shipment will look like without all the extras I ordered (see next pics). So here we have 2 bottles of Instant Chemistry Developer, 2 Made for You (Me!) custom hair colors, and a Perfect Match Kit, which includes a pair of gloves, and foil packets of stain guard, stain remover, shampoo & conditioner.
On the right side of my package were all the additional products I ordered with my credit. In the middle is Tinted Love, an as needed treatment that is meant to maintain and/or enhance the vibrancy of my color. On the sides were two sealed bags that I was dying to open up!
So the bag on the left contained all my hair coloring tools: a timer, 4 hair clips (now only 3 since one of my pups grabbed one out of the shower), a hair coloring brush, and the mixing bowl. I felt so professional, and I will definitely be using these every time I color my hair!
On the right were my Heart Lock It Shampoo, Love Unconditionally Conditioner, and Shining Armor Renewing Treatment Oil (my absolute favorite product hands down). This stuff smells so nice and is not heavy at all!
So I quickly got down to business and followed my instructions to a tee! My first step was to protect the skin around my hair line with the eSalon Stain Guard. From there, I started mixing my first bottle of color and developer meant for my roots. I noticed that this was a much darker color than expected, almost like a dark violet. So I went ahead separated my hair into 4 sections (like my instructions said) and applied the first hair color to my roots. I set my timer for 25 minutes and while that was working, I started to mix the 2nd bottle meant for the shaft and ends of my hair. This color was more of what I was expecting, a deep burgundy red. Once my timer went off I started working this color into my hair a section at a time as well. This was meant to go on for 10 minutes. I let the colors work their magic and settled in for a few rounds of Candy Crush. As soon as my timer went off I jumped in the shower with my foil packets of shampoo and conditioner. There was plenty of product for my long hair, not typical tiny foil packets. The consistencies & scent were great and I could tell the conditioner was going to work well at detangling afterwards.
Voila! My results! The pictures on the left and in the middle are a much more accurate depiction of what my color looks like…the snippet on the right is from Instagram using a filter, and the picture underneath is the whole picture of my hair with the IG filter.

Overall, I was completely satisfied with my eSalon experience and I will definitely be signing up for their auto-delivery service. I’m still not at the exact color I want, but it does take a few applications to achieve a desired color, especially when it comes to the world of reds. Quality wise I felt that the eSalon hair color was much better than boxed color and it is not tested on animals! This is a must for me! Most boxed colors do not adhere to these same standards. Quantity was beyond what I expected. I usually use two box colors for my long hair and I usually spend about $20-$24 each month. The same amount spent at eSalon included the typical gloves & conditioner, but it also included stain guard, shampoo, & stain remover. eSalon is $19.95 (plus $5 shipping) with auto-delivery.
